In the first time since the cup was created in 1958 (which used to be called the Fairs Cup when my beloved Leeds United won in 1968 and 1971), Sevilla have been the only team to win in three consecutive years. Barcelona, Valencia, Real Madrid and Sevilla themselves have all won in two consecutive seasons. Daniel Sturridge put Liverpool 1-0 up at St. Jakob-Park, before Kevin Gameiro and a Andujar Coke brace responded with 3 goals in 25 minutes to seal the victory. Congrats as Sevilla Win 2016 UEFA Europa League.
Jurgen Klopp gave his assessment on the game in a post-match interview. Saying, “It was obvious the first goal of Sevilla had a big influence on our own game. In this moment we lost faith in our style of play. We changed from passing simply and quickly to complicated. We lost our formation, so it was not compact anymore. We’ve had this situation one or two times before; as I said in the Chelsea game, we were quite happy we had the problem there. That was a good moment to put the finger in and change it. The first half was OK and we deserved the 1-0”.
Congratulations to Sevilla and commiserations to Liverpool who will start to build toward next season.
