I first heard of ExP when I stumbled across Northern Hip Hop duo : ‘FlameGriller’ and instantly connected with their music. What blessed my ears was truly outstanding; Humble Hip Hop music complete with witty lyricism, catchy hooks and interesting subject matter. ExP – Remarkable Unremarkable is the 2017 solo album from ExP. It takes the listener on a honest journey through the life, views and opinions of the Leeds rapper.
Exp released this album after what he describes as the ‘darkest part’ of his life so far ; an unfortunate time in which his father was put into full time care having been afflicted with dementia. He states that his reason for making this ‘feel good’ album was to counter-act his negative mindset and pull himself ‘out of the quagmire’. The result: One of my favorite Hip Hop albums I have heard in the last few years and I urge you to have a listen and to give ExP the respect he deserves.
‘Work Is Shit’ is an insanely catchy and hilarious depiction of an office job, ‘‘Trivia’ is a very witty track full of random knowledge and facts and ‘Ode To The Internet’ delves into societies growing obsession with Social Media and examines its usefulness to an aspiring artist. The production is excellent throughout and it’s authentic sample-based beats make the package complete. Hip Hop up north is fairly few and far between and over the years a lot of talented Northern artists have arguably lived in the shadow of the south, so much so that we are starting to see northern rappers wanting to sound like their cockney counterparts.
However – ExP is clearly Yorkshire and proud (We Don’t Do That) and he gives hope for the future of Northern Hip Hop. He has attracted the attention of comedian and Hip Hop Saved My Life Podcaster ; Romesh Ranganathan & DJ Format who clearly think that ExP is well, pretty dam Remarkable…
