For me this game came out of nowhere, I couldn’t believe this had gone under my radar from being such a big fan of Skyrim and the Witcher. However, in Kingdom Come Deliverance you won’t find any monsters, magic or enchanted weapons.
Instead prepare to prove yourself in a beautiful 14th Century Bohemia, crawling with foreign invaders, filthy peasant’s, stuck up noblemen and rabbles of bandits! Without giving away any of the story, you play a young son of a blacksmith called Henry who soon finds himself quickly occupied with many more issues than helping his father over the forge.
This game facilitates realistic sword fighting techniques, think Chivalry but more refined! Plus, many other in game mechanics. Think you can just walk up to a nobleman covered in mud and blood and expect to be treated as an equal, think again! How you dress and how clean you are can make all the difference on quests should you choose a more civil route favouring words as opposed to a spiked mace or a halberd.
If you notice your sword is as blunt as a butter knife and your armour isn’t protecting you? Time to visit your local blacksmith for some maintenance! Using a grind stone and applying pressure whilst setting the angle is much more satisfying than “Press A to sharpen sword”. However Some may find the gear maintenance and realism in this game a tad over-facing at first. But it makes getting ready for a big quest more eventful. Setting out with clean clothes, sturdy armour and your horses saddlebags filled with food, arrows and bandages.
I could talk about this game for ages and how it’s a must for all RPG and adventure lovers, but it doesn’t go without flaws. There is an issue with some bugs especially during the first week of the games release, but huge patches have been added to the game fixing hundreds of quests. In 50 hours of gameplay I’ve only encountered one missed cutscene (annoying but easy to find on YouTube) and a few NPC’s dropping things they are carrying, the odd bugged side quest and one issue where I fell out the map, luckily, I was dropped back on solid ground as continued as normal.
There’s also one thing I found a bit off about the save game system, you need to purchase, loot or craft a Savoury Schnapps (some strange acholic beverage) to save your game outside of the usual autosave system, which to be fair is after checkpoints, sleeping over a certain time or even visiting a bathhouse.
All In all, this game gets a solid 8.5 from me at its current state whilst writing this, soon id hope to see full bug fixes for all the quests! You will find yourself reloading to your last checkpoint every now and then if somethings gone wrong. Quests can also time out to so don’t accept too many at once, no warning is given but for example if someone is waiting for medicine they will die in a day or two if you run off on another side quest!
Apart from its few flaws Kingdom Come Deliverance is great in every way. It has really satisfying combat, not to mention an amazing storyline with great cinematics. The graphics are fantastic, and the map is very detailed. There are some spectacular sites to be seen from horseback! This game is also now steady gaining mods to add to the already huge replay factor.
