The catalyst that is The Mouse Outfit are back with their third studio album, not counting the remix of Escape Music. They are releasing Jagged Tooth Crook just before embarking on a European tour, it will be on general release May 4th 2018, or Star Wars day for the more nerdy among us.
We have been lucky enough to have a listen to it before this release date and as expected, it does not disappoint. This album does take a different path to their previous work though, much more funk based tracks with a slow build up, rather than their complementary hip hop ensemble. The start of the album has a very mellow build and the vocals tend to blend with the instrumental, as if they were another instrument rather than the instrumental written for the vocals.
As the tracks progress through the album there is more of a hip hop vibe, but this is mainly due to there being a faster flow to some of the verses. This all leads to good listening and is nice to see that they can change the vibe of each release. It will definitely lead to an interesting set list, seeing the merge between older songs and new will be an enjoyable experience.
As always the musical ensemble that is The Mouse Outfit have teamed up with Manchester rappers both new and old. We see Dubbul O, Ellis Meade, Black Josh, Sparkz, Fox and of course Dr Syntax back for another album, and hopefully feature in some of the upcoming tour. We also get to see some newer names on the scene, and hopefully they will get the same treatment previous rappers and singers have received, a little catalyst of exposure that can only be done in The Mouse Outfit’s way.
Kinkai is an artist we were very impressed with when we saw him on their last tour. He has a few tracks on this album and it is great to see him getting the exposure he deserves. IAMDDB is another new voice to grace the instrumentals The Mouse Outfit have put together, and her renditions of the hooks and choruses to the songs is again a welcome addition to the album.
Having two musical experts at the helm of The Mouse Outfit has led to some great albums, tours and projects. They have a knack of finding the next up and coming Manchester sound, adapting it and blending it with their classic vibe, something I feel they could do again and again. Be sure to grab a copy of the album, don’t just stream it, and/or check them out at a show near you. Their tour is already away and runs until the 1st July, check out their site for full details.
