The New Mutants what can I say. Just when I thought the Marvel Universe as pretty organised and predictable they dropped the Deadpool movie and blew me away. Now they have done it again. The trailer for ‘The New Mutants’ is just below, I’d watch that and then read the rest of this so you can get a feel for it the way I have. This is the HHKMag The New Mutants Movie Review.
I mean wow! They have truly taken a spin on the X-Men movies and I hope the trailer didn’t have all the best bits. This is something I hadn’t even considered. A true horror movie, and why not? If you strip back the comic book side of things, mutants could easily fit into the horror genre. We are used to them donning yellow and blue spandex. Having quirky one liners and unnecessary things like superhero landings. Lets strip that right back to the bone though. These are people with magical abilities and adaptions that could easily make them the subject of a horror movie. I mean look at Freddie Cruger. Then lets look at sticking all of the mutants who are a bit unhinged into one assylum. Throw some nosey teenagers in there and boom classic horror movie.
I’m very keen to see this. The difference between this movie and most horror films though is I think I’ll be routing for the mutants. Probably due to the years of comic book reading and the several collections of Marvel films that have made me route for them in the past. It’s like when you watch ‘Planet of the Apes’, everyone routes for the apes right?
This film could be amazing, they don’t really have any limits on what they can do with them because mutants are so free roaming. You just have to lay in an ability and let them loose control, or get sick of humans and start to fight back from the testing and control being put on them. This could change the Marvel universe and films, adding a whole new genre, horror. At this point the movie is a fresh concept. Maybe by ‘The New Mutants 26’ we will be a bit bored of it. Until then though bring it on!
